Average sink size
Kitchen sinks range in width from 7″ to 72″; the standard sink size is 22″ x 30″.
Single-bowl sinks can be up to 36 inches wide; although larger widths are available, they are rare and usually include extra-wide rims or attached worktop surfaces. Double-bowl sinks typically measure up to 48 inches wide (bowls may vary in size or depth). Three-bowl sinks can be up to 60 inches. Bar and prep sinks normally have an irregular size.
Sinks are usually between 6 and 12 inches deep. Most typical sinks are 7 to 10 inches deep; some people prefer to use a deeper sink to stack dishes or use large pans or cookie sheets frequently. Just don’t go too deep – because it will be a hard time for short people to reach the bottom of the sink, and if for tall people, who have to bend down further to get to the sink bowl. Keep in mind that undermount sinks are about 1-1/2 inches deeper than drop-in or flush-mount sinks.
To make the most of every inch of space, consider using a zero-radius sink (or a sink with small radius corners). Zero radius corners are perfectly angled, not rounded, so large pans or pots can fit into the corners. These sinks are harder to clean than those that are rounded (the smaller the radius, the sharper the corners), so be sure to consider this factor before purchasing a zero-radius sink.
Kitchen size
The overall size of the kitchen is an important factor in sink size. In smaller kitchens with limited space, a larger sink means less counter space and less cabinet space. A rule of thumb, but not set in stone: A 150-square-foot kitchen can handle a 24-inch-wide sink. Custom-fitting cutting boards can make up for the reduced counter space, worktops, or covers to go over the sink when not in use.
If space isn’t an issue (or even if it is, but a large sink trump that), make sure the sink is proportional to the overall kitchen layout. A large size farmhouse sink will overwhelm a small kitchen while the same size undermount sink may not; a small sink will seem insignificant in a large kitchen.
Base cabinet size
If your customer is using an existing layout or a small kitchen, it needs to consider the size of the base cabinet, which determines the maximum sink size. A large sink requires a large base cabinet, which may decrease the overall cabinet space or look weird surrounded by relatively small cabinets.
Standard kitchen cabinets are 24 inches deep (25-1/4 inches – 26 inches wide and 36 inches – 42 inches high), but base cabinets are available in various widths. To determine the maximum sink size for the base cabinets, measure the cabinets and subtract 2 to 3 inches from each dimension. A 36-inch base cabinet can hold a maximum of a 33-inch sink; a 30-inch cabinet should hold a sink no larger than 27 inches wide. A standard 22-inch x 30-inch sink can comfortably accommodate the average 24-inch sink base cabinet; When planning storage in the base cabinet, be sure to consider the depth of the sink.
We can cut the cabinet into a larger sink, but this is not recommended for several reasons: it will void the cabinet warranty, damage the counter support, and replacing the sink will require damage to the cabinet.
Average usage
Before deciding on a sink size, take a close look at the cooking and cleaning habits. Such as you can ask your customers these questions: How many plates do you use in a day? How big is your largest dish? Do you bathe your children or pets in the sink?
Depending on different cooking and washing style, you may recommend a sink with additional features, such as an integrated drainboard or smaller prep bowls. Different sink styles work for different kinds of cooks: many prefer a large single-bowl sink for its undisturbed capacity; others choose a double-bowl sink with one side for plates and the other for food preparation; still, others prefer a three-bowl sink with sufficient washing space and a dedicated prep sink, while some choose two completely separate sinks for multiple users. Multi-bowl sinks with low dividers offer two advantages in one package: larger single bowl sinks and multi-bowl sinks.
Surrounding area
Just like to plan the dimensions of an overall kitchen, consider the dimensions of the surrounding elements. Check the window above the sink and other fixtures nearby – counters, stove, accessories, even cabinet details – and measure to see if the sink looks proportionate. Place a piece of paper cut to size over the sink area or draw it out with masking tape to accurately judge the results.
Remember to consider other elements of your kitchen when taking measurements: backsplash, faucet, soap dispenser, water heater, and any other countertop accessories that take up space.
